• My son couldn't get enough of this book when he was young. He wanted it read over and over again, and I was happy to do it for him, not only because it is so much fun to read, but also because it teaches so many good values. He's now 34 years old and a truly good man. Years later when I was teaching middle school remedial readers, I used this book to demonstrate to them how to add intonation and drama when reading a story. When it was their turn to give it a try, they all had such fun taking turns reading it aloud and laughing at their own efforts. The true joy of reading.
• My all time favorite. This will teach your children about how silly it is to prejudge, discriminate and even to constantly demand more! more! MORE! I think it puts into a child's perspective, bullying, fairness, being nice, being equitable in our everyday relationships. To be more accepting of others and even ourselves as we are and not having to change ourselves to "fit in" with another's pre-conceived notions of who and what we should be.
• One of my favorite books from my childhood. Now, as I read it to my 6 year old, I realize how impactful the lessons are from each of the stories. The Sneetches learn the value of living in a more accepting society and that you should not judge someone based on appearances but rather love them for who they are on the inside. (It also shows how easy it is for someone to take advantage of those that find their value only in their appearance.
  The north and south going zax show us that being stubborn and inflexible will not let us grow and will keep us stuck as the world continues without us.
  The green pants with no legs has a lesson about fear and empathy.
  The mom with all the Dave’s.... well, that is pretty straightforward. It’s does show the value of stepping outside your box and being unique. Though really it just reminds us to not name all of our kids Dave because it will cause so much trouble in the long run. The random alternate name suggestions are still funny.
  Overall, it’s still a fun read and a great opportunity to open up important conversations with your kids.
• The Sneetches and Other Stories is fantastic reading for your child. It's not just that excellent first story in the title, but also three others that range from fun to thoughtful.
  
  The Sneetches is about creatures who separate into two groups based on appearance. With the star-bellied Sneetches looking down on the non-star-bellied Sneetches, tension builds...until in walks an entrepreneur who can instantly erase the differences with a "star-on" machine. I've heard reviewers crank about this story being pro-welfare, or liberal propaganda, but the lesson is more about prejudice, and while I won't spoil the story for you, there is a very P.T. Barnum-styled ending that helps the Sneetches realize that snap judgements lead to blinding one to what matters.
  
  The story "The Zax" is another blindered example where two creatures hate each other so much they let life pass them by. The rest of the world moves on, while they can't seem to get over their mutual dislike of each other. This story is very short.
  
  Then we have "Too Many Daves". Hilarious and silly, this is practically a short two-page poem, all about a mother who made the mistake of naming all of her children Dave. My daughter was always delighted when I read this story because of all the silly words in it.
  
  Which brings us to the unsung gem at the end of "The Sneetches and Other Stories" the tale "What Was I Afraid Of?" Dealing with a child's fear of the unknown, this spooky little tale resolves itself sweetly, and I really enjoy the way Dr. Seuss shows a child that perhaps with a bit of determination, one might find that one's fears and anxieties really aren't so bad after all. The fact that the main character is afraid of a pair of green pants is silly enough that a child can instantly grasp that there are reasonable fears...and then there are unreasonable ones.
  
  Whatever stories you choose to read, read to your child. You will see a huge difference in their learning, because you took the time to be with them and encouraged them. I loved The Sneetches and Other Stories because its lessons to me are the sorts of things every child should learn about dealing with others and with themselves.
• This is a excellent book that teaches simple morals and life lessons that are easy to understand and identifiable. The first story teaches about pride and envy and how you can end up unhappy and broke if you let those govern your life. In the end they learn that one is no better than the other. The next book is about being stubborn and how you can waste a lot of time being stubborn. The third book is silly and refers to having many kids named very unique names and then regretting it. The last book is my favorite. I have read it to my boys many many times and they love it too. It has a creature who is scared of a pair of empty pants. He is afraid of them not because they are sinister or malicious, but because they are so very different from him and he has never seen something like it before. I won't elaborate any more other than to say we really enjoy this book.
• No dimensions listed or photo showing scale. Turned out to be very small with tiny print inside. Especially difficult to read when some of the text is black over a dark background. We have to turn the lights way up, not good for bedtime or my eyes. Still giving two stars because the book itself was in great shape, the shipping was fast, and the stories are great. Just disappointed in the actual product dimensions. I'll probably pick up a bigger copy when I find it for a good price.
• This is one of the best and most important Dr. Seuss books of all time because it helps to socialize children into understanding the psychology of social class, tribalism, racism, etc.. That their sense of self worth/esteem should not be dominated by the social constructs of others.

• This book is fluff. It's meant to string the reader along to purchase a 3rd installment. I'm so over writers doing this to loyal readers.
• This is a rip off. After years of enjoying this author, I don’t think I can support anymore. This isn’t a series of books. This is one book chopped into 10 dollar pieces. So now I can pay 30 or 40 dollars for one story. And I thought the characters in the book were con artists!
• I really enjoyed the first book, however this book was very disappointing. It just kept going in circles and I became annoyed and felt pressured to finish it because I was hoping it would actually evolve into a good story. It finally did...at the end.Im not sure if ill read the next one. Ive read all of her books and have never felt this let down!
• Disappointing. I wish I would have waited for the reviews before purchasing. I was excited to see Odell get exposed but that never happens. I dislike how weak Odell is portrayed, how arrogant Joyce is, and how deceitful both Milton and Yvonne are. I rushed to finish the book b/c I grew tired of the same old pattern of blackmail, siddity neighbors, stealing, bootlegging, hypocrisy and back again. There was no conclusion and
  I'm unsure if I'll read the next book in this series. If I do I definitely won't preorder nor pay full price for it.
• Book was awesome - I just pray there is a third installment because there are way too many unanswered questions! however, I loved the journey this book took me on and I felt like I knew and cared about the characters. It was good and I couldn't wait to read the next.Yovonne and her husband was so greedy.They bootlegged and worked and he gambled.Each one one them also blackedmailed the same person.That still was not enough money for them.They lived way above their means.All the things they did to make it brought bad karma.I just didn't like the way this book ended.I hope the Author will write another sequel.

• Not happy about this purchase for a four year old. I bought it to use for exactly what the description said it was intended for. I opened the book and was shocked what was inside. First page said “Eat a bag of dicks. A swear word coloring book for adults”
  
  Be Careful what you buy it may not be what you wanted.
• The tracing part is okay. But the matching images are ridiculous R for Retro Car, W for Walking Boat, Y for Yellow Boat (with a black and white picture) .
  And the kicker X for X-Mas Sleigh .
  Only 5.99 but it's going back.
• I'm not sure it's right to deduct one star from this product for the following reason, but I am. All of the noun words with the pictures are related to things that move. And some of the words are rather obscure just to fit the theme (see photos). I would have preferred words used more often for learning. However, the front does say On the Go in smaller letters and has all vehicle images. If you look at the image of the back of the book provided by the seller, you can see the on the move words and photos. I just didn't notice when purchasing. I was just focused on alphabet and sight words. Also, it would have been nice to make the pages perforated so the pages could be torn out for easier writing.

• Bought for my 2.6 year old granddaughter, I think she is a tad to young for these. But she will be ready before I know it. Nice books.
• Super cute tracing book for my preschooler. I didn’t realize that this is geared for boys. It has pictures of trucks or cars on each page. My little girl doesn’t seem to notice or care, but just an FYI.
• Extreamly Helpful for children, especially for those who have never been in a daycare or pre-school. Grandson loves all of the cool colors as he puts it and is learning words and sounds of words!! Great Book!!!
• To be honest I didn’t really pay attention that this book was all about modes of transportation. I feel like some of them are a bit of a stretch. For example the L is an ocean liner but My four-year-old thinks it’s a boat. B is a Biplane but my 4 year old thinks it is an airplane. It’s been counterproductive for teaching the alphabet.

• Really wanted the illustrations. I didn't realize that there were so many illustrations and that this book prints the stories in the original Strand magazine format. It's just like reading the original with numerous illustrations embedded inside the text. Totally superior to reading text only. Got this used for a few dollars and totally worth it. Recommend to anyone who want the full experience. But remember, not all the stories were illustrated and therefore some are missing form this book.
• This review applies to the version of the book available from MysteriousPress.com/Otto Penzler editions.
  
  There are a number of one-star reviews that some versions are missing any part of the text that was originally printed in a newspaper or letter format - or in the case of this novel, the manuscript that details the legend concerning Sir Hugo and the Hound of the Baskervilles.
  
  I've doublechecked, and the MysteriousPress e-book does NOT appear to be missing any of these sections. The manuscript is definitely there, as are the few newspaper articles in chapter 4.
  
  The story, of course, is classic Holmes at his best - disguises, uncovering clues, setting Watson on a task without giving him all the details, requiring the client to take some risks, and finding the villain. Well worth the read, and well-formatted.
• If you are buying this book to have the Sherlock Holmes stories that were printed in the "Strand," then this is a great buy at $8.00. However, if you are particularly interested in the illustrations by Sidney Paget (it's "Sidney," folks, Sydney Paget was also a Englishman, but not an illustrator), then you are probably in for disappointment if you've seen them before. The original illustrations look like they've been xeroxed on a 1980s copier with the contrast turned to maximum. The shadowy drawings have been reproduced as starkly black and white with little of the wonderful shading that characterizes the original artwork. In short, buy this book for a cheap collection of Doyle's work (although not a complete collection of Sherlock Holmes) to carry around and read for fun, but if you're trying to get it accompanied by Paget's artwork (which frankly has become the iconic portrayal of Holmes), look for another anthology.
• I read this as a kid and the creepiness of the legendary hellhound made quite an impression. I decided to re-read it when I found out it was set in Devon, which has special associations for me. Fortunately, there is a lot of description of the Devon moors by Dr. Watson (a tad bit unrealistically, it must be admitted, in his letters to Holmes and in his diary) and it contributes to the brooding mood of the story.
  
  The book is, of course, well-written, but what I noticed was that it's when Sherlock Holmes is present that the pages turn the fastest. Doyle does a terrific job of creating an unforgettable, quirky character through mostly dialogue. Holmes is often a bit of a buffoon, really, who can't let an opportunity go by to show his genius. At the end of the book, when he could have gracefully allowed Dr. Watson to take all the credit for having found out, entirely on his own, a vital piece of information, Holmes says "This also you cleared up in a very effective way, though I had already come to the same conclusions from my own observations."
  
  He has to drive it home that nothing escapes his brilliant investigative skills. As if Watson didn't already know that. What would it have hurt to have allowed Watson to think he had contributed something necessary? Somehow, despite this selfish boorishness, you still find Holmes endearing. Maybe that's because it hints at a chink in his armor, an underlying need to be seen as perfect in this area of his life. A hint of insecurity in such a "masterful" man, as Watson calls him, is appealing.
  
  One part of the book made me laugh, and not in a good way. The escaped convict, a vicious and diabolical murderer--who Dr. Watson is at pains to point out is unrepentant and unredeemable and likely to commit more murders if he isn't apprehended--is allowed to go free for the sake of one weeping woman's feelings about what he'd been like as a child. But here's the truly awful part. He's only allowed to go free if he leaves England and takes his murderous ways to South America. Obviously, S.American lives cannot compare in value to English lives, so it makes perfect sense to send a murderer off to that distant land. What a happy outcome for all involved! They congratulate themselves on this intelligent solution.
  
  Another thing that struck me as I read was how many of Agatha Christie's mysteries (particularly her Poirot stories) had elements taken from this one Doyle mystery. I began to understand why she was so modest about the success of her books and didn't like to be praised for them. I imagine she felt the credit often went to Doyle. Though, in fact, her own writing has stood the test of time so whatever she owed to him for plot points , she certainly deserved the credit for her own creations.
  
  I would have given this classic five stars except for the two last paragraphs in the book, which undermined the whole mystery. When it comes right down to it, the murderer's basic design is hugely flawed. Dr. Watson points it out and Holmes admits he has no answer for it. He gives some possible, speculative solutions but none of them hold up very well. We're supposed to believe the murderer is one of the cleverest Holmes has ever come up against, but the very last paragraph reveals that he was incredibly shortsighted and frankly stupid.
  
  All the same, it holds up well and is much more accessible to a modern audience than many classics. That's probably partly due to everyone's familiarity with Holmes, but it's also due to Doyle's clean and crisp writing. You won't regret giving it a read.
• What a treat for Sherlock Holmes fans. Of course, I've read all of the stories and novels. Of course I already have the complete collection, and then some. This book is an amazing addition for fans.
  
  First, the downside. This is a facsimile of the ORIGINAL Strand issues, which means that some pages have text that looks a bit faded, or light, as has been complained about by other reviewers. But I ask you, what did the typical print look like 126 years ago? Most readers picked up magazines that had "soft print" off the shelf. So, I guess it's not a downside after all.
  
  To the most striking positive, this is Sherlock Holmes as was read in it's originality! This is as close to an actual copy as you will get. Next to my original 1907 edition of "Adventures, Memoirs, and Sign of Four" this is my second favorite collection of stories. (I admit, I would much rather read this copy, then risk turning the pages of my 110 year old book!
  
  To read it in it's original magazine, double column format with artwork from Sidney Paget is simply a treat! It transports you to a simpler time on the back streets of London.
  
  As a devoted fan and fellow Sherlock Holmes author, I cannot but praise it highly!
