America has a God-shaped hole in its heart, argues New York Times bestselling author Ben Shapiro, and we shouldn't fill it with politics and hate.
In 2016, Ben Shapiro spoke at UC Berkeley. Hundreds of police officers were required from 10 UC campuses across the state to protect his speech, which was -- ironically -- about the necessity for free speech and rational debate.
He came to argue that Western Civilization is in the midst of a crisis of purpose and ideas. Our freedoms are built upon the twin notions that every human being is made in God's image and that human beings were created with reason capable of exploring God's world.
We can thank these values for the birth of science, the dream of progress, human rights, prosperity, peace, and artistic beauty. Jerusalem and Athens built America, ended slavery, defeated the Nazis and the Communists, lifted billions from poverty and gave billions spiritual purpose. Jerusalem and Athens were the foundations of the Magna Carta and the Treaty of Westphalia; they were the foundations of Declaration of Independence, Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s Letter from Birmingham Jail.
Civilizations that rejected Jerusalem and Athens have collapsed into dust. The USSR rejected Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law, substituting a new utopian vision of ""social justice"" - and they starved and slaughtered tens of millions of human beings. The Nazis rejected Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law, and they shoved children into gas chambers. Venezuela rejects Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law, and citizens of their oil-rich nation have been reduced to eating dogs.
We are in the process of abandoning Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law, favoring instead moral subjectivism and the rule of passion. And we are watching our civilization collapse into age-old tribalism, individualistic hedonism, and moral subjectivism. We believe we can reject Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law and satisfy ourselves with intersectionality, or scientific materialism, or progressive politics, or authoritarian governance, or nationalistic solidarity.
We can't.
The West is special, and in The Right Side of History, Ben Shapiro bravely explains that it's because too many of us have lost sight of the moral purpose that drives us each to be better, or the sacred duty to work together for the greater good, or both. A stark warning, and a call to spiritual arms, this book may be the first step in getting our civilization back on track.

"What an essential voice in the political commentary world! I loved Ben’s book “Bullies†and I’m loving this book too so far. I'm on my second reading.
You don’t have to agree with everything he says to learn something from him. His arguments and logic are airtight. This book’s thesis is an important one. It IS Reason and Religious belief that makes this country great.
Ben’s knowledge of classic Western philosophy is impressive. The scholarship is at times broad and deep. This book dabbles with some of the most powerful ideas in history, and it’s so beautifully written. It reminds me of Richard Tarnas' book, "The Passion of The Western Mind" (where he spends the first half the 500-page book talking about the massive influence of Judeo-Christian values as well). However, I like Ben's style and application to the contemporary American experience.
Regarding political speculations, I really hope he does not run for VP. As I read Ben's book, I hear the tone and register in his voice as if I were listening to his podcast: I never want it to end. It would be a shame if The Ben Shapiro Show had to shut down. I want him and his family to live a Long, Prosperous, and Fulfilling life. We need to keep hearing his voice and perspective—without all the constraints being a political leader brings.
This is Ben’s best book so far and definitely worth reading ASAP!

The Right Side of History How Reason and Moral Purpose Made the West Great Ben Shapiro 9781982649227 Books Reviews
- As a mother, especially the mother of a passionately conservative teenager entering his college search year amongst today's unsettling environment, I am so grateful to Ben Shapiro for writing this timely book. I've grown increasingly concerned with the unnecessary and completely unwarranted infighting within humanKIND along with an erosive tribalism mentality that certain ideologies seem to want to perpetuate in order to control more and more people-enabled by adults who should know that they are being played. That anyone is still allowing this to happen is what has been baffling me.
Enter Ben Shapiro and The Right Side of History, which touches upon the incidents that led us to this madness and seeks to solve these issues which have become insurmountable to some of us. I hope that more potential readers realize that this type of information, filled with actual facts and compelling reading, is crucial to those whose foundation relies on us to provide the best future for the next generation. A generation of young people who learn from the actions of adults whose unhealthy addiction to daily outrage and the demonization of any beliefs that oppose our own are not helping us to evolve together as we were meant to.
Thank you Ben, I am so grateful to you for helping to raise the necessary awareness on behalf of our children. - If you're familiar with Ben Shapiro, then this book is exactly what you'd expect. Spurious logic bent to fit whatever beliefs Shapiro has, smugly presented in a faux-intellectual way. It's absurd that the following is on the product page
"America has a God-shaped hole in its heart, argues New York Times bestselling author Ben Shapiro, and we shouldn't fill it with politics and hate."
First of all, it's quite a leap to say that America has a God-shaped hole in its heart. Evangelicals run everything in this country. Second, "we shouldn't fill it with politics and hate" is something I think everyone can agree with, but BEN SHAPIRO is telling us this? Political pundit and liberal-hater Ben Shapiro? The guy who spends all day, every day writing devisively about politics? The guy who can go five minutes without bashing liberals (ie, half the country)? How can someone write that without dying of laughter?
America has a love-shaped hole in its heart, and we shouldn't fil it with the absurdly hateful and devisive rhetoric of people like Ben Shapiro. We should be spending less time listening to political pundits of every stripe and more time listening to and attempting to understand each other. Good gravy, the scourge of these pundits who prey on our fears and ignorance just to turn a buck needs to end. - What an essential voice in the political commentary world! I loved Ben’s book “Bullies†and I’m loving this book too so far. I'm on my second reading.

Excellent overview of how the roots of Jewish morality and Greek philosophy of reason led to the development of western civilization, and why we need to adhere to both to preserve goodness and liberty
- If you don't know where you've come from, you'll have a hard time knowing where you're headed. Ben gives a great presentation on the origins and development of Western Civilization. Highly recommend!!
- The Right Side of History is historically accurate and philosophically consistent. It stays on the academic and logical side of the delicate balance between patriotic nationalism for no other reason than ‘Merica and a reasonable argument that indeed (as he contends in the book), “As a society, we are forgetting that almost everything great that has ever happened in history happened because of people who believe in both Judeo-Christian values and the Greek-born power of reason.â€
Shapiro has once again proved his argument through reason and answered his critics with undeniable truth. It’s far more than meager glorification of Western civilization. He spends ample time explain how we got where we are in the West and why the left wants to destroy the idea of democracy. An incredible read which was well worth reading the entire book the day it was released. - Great book, very apt and thought provoking
- Great perspective... only a couple chapters in and I can’t put it down. Thought provoking.
